Our patients often ask how durable a dental bridge is, as it is one of the most common types of dental restorations. To address this question, our specialist, Dr. Béla Sápi, an expert in conservative dentistry and prosthodontics, provides the answer.
What is a dental bridge?
Dental bridges replace missing teeth, restore chewing function, improve appearance, and promote oral health by bridging the gap of a missing tooth or teeth with a stable section supported by two abutments.
Types of dental bridges
Dental bridges can be classified into two types based on their support structure:
- Traditional bridges, supported by natural teeth, and
- Implant-supported bridges.
In the case of a traditional bridge, the abutments are the adjacent natural teeth. For bridges supported by dental implants, the bridge is held in place by structures screwed into artificial roots (implants) embedded in the jawbone.
When is a dental bridge recommended?
- When the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth are significantly damaged or have undergone multiple treatments.
- When replacing the missing tooth with an implant is not a viable option.
- When the patient prefers a solution that does not require oral surgery.
How long do dental bridges last?
The durability of a dental bridge depends on various factors, including the patient’s lifestyle. Smoking, for example, negatively affects the bridge’s longevity, as the toxins in cigarette smoke weaken the gum’s natural defenses. This makes the supporting tissues, such as the gums and bone, more susceptible to tooth decay and periodontal disease, which can loosen teeth. Unstable teeth are unable to firmly support the bridge, ultimately shortening its lifespan.
The location and size of the bridge also play a crucial role. A bridge replacing a single missing tooth typically lasts longer than one spanning a larger gap. Contrary to popular belief, the material of the bridge has less impact on its lifespan. Today’s dental bridges are made from high-quality materials, such as porcelain fused to cobalt-chromium alloy (metal-ceramic bridges), porcelain on zirconia frameworks, or monolithic zirconia. Any of these materials can potentially allow the bridge to remain functional for decades.
It’s difficult to provide an exact number as the lifespan of a dental bridge depends on multiple factors. However, a well-placed bridge made from high-quality materials should last at least 5–10 years. With proper oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and a balanced lifestyle, it’s not uncommon for a dental bridge to require replacement only after 15–20 years.

How long does it take to get used to a dental bridge?
It varies from person to person, but in some cases the adjustment period might be relatively long. If the tooth gap has been present for an extended period, the mouth may need to “relearn” chewing and speaking. However, over time, the muscles adapt to the dental bridge, ensuring normal functionality.
How can I take care of my dental bridge properly?
Maintaining a dental bridge is similar to caring for natural teeth:
- Brush your teeth daily and use dental floss.
- Clean underneath the bridge daily with floss or an interdental brush.
- Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods.
- Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
What does the procedure look like?
Dental bridges are used to replace a missing tooth by anchoring the restoration to the two adjacent teeth, which serve as abutments. For the bridge to be placed, the supporting teeth must be healthy and are prepared by being “shaved down” to accommodate the bridge.
Despite this preparation, the integrity of the supporting teeth is not compromised, and they remain healthy. The final result closely resembles the natural appearance of your teeth, making the bridge an almost invisible part of your smile. However, after the bridge is fitted, it is important to take extra care when chewing hard foods.
Dental bridge price: what can I expect?
