When is a dental crown necessary? What materials are used for these restorations, and how much do the different types of crowns cost?

What is a dental crown used for?

A dental crown is a type of fixed restoration that covers the tooth to restore its shape, size, function, and strength while also improving the patient’s appearance.

A dental crown may be necessary in the following cases:

  • weakened teeth (e.g., due to decay)
  • cracked or fractured teeth
  • teeth severely damaged by trauma
  • teeth with large fillings
  • supporting dental bridges
  • covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth, as well as enamel or dentin developmental defects
  • restoring a dental implant

The process of making and fitting a dental crown

  • Imaging – Before the consultation, a panoramic X-ray or CT scan is taken to assess the condition of the teeth.
  • Consultation – The dentist evaluates the case, recommends a procedure, and outlines the treatment plan.
  • Preparation – This involves tartar removal if needed, reshaping the tooth, taking impressions and bite registration, selecting the tooth shade, and placing a temporary crown or bridge.
  • Trial fitting – Once the final crown or bridge is ready, a fitting is conducted to check for proper fit and color before cementing.
  • Final placement – The crown is permanently fixed in place.
  • Follow-up – A check-up is scheduled one week after placement or during the patient’s routine six-month dental examination.

Crown options available at Uniklinik

Depending on the type of dental restoration and the patient’s needs, various types of crowns can be made. In addition to metal-ceramic and zirconia crowns, we also offer crowns made using PROCERA technology.

Types of dental crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns are porcelain crowns bonded to a specific metal alloy. The metal alloy can be either a “traditional” nickel-free metal or gold. At our clinic, PFM crowns are made by fusing porcelain onto a cobalt-chromium alloy.

Metal-free crowns, PFZ crowns

A porcelain-fused-to-zirconia (PFZ) crown is a porcelain crown fused onto a zirconia framework. It is an excellent choice for patients with higher aesthetic demands or metal allergies.

Crowns manufactured using PROCERA technology offer a perfect fit and exceptional overall quality. They are primarily made from zirconia but can also be produced from titanium or metal alloys (cobalt-chromium).

For front teeth, we recommend pressed ceramic restorations, which provide a highly natural appearance and excellent stability.

The factors determining crown prices

The price of a dental crown depends on the materials used, as well as the specific technology and procedure applied. For example, metal-free porcelain crowns are more expensive than metal-ceramic crowns. To check out our prices, see our List of Prices page!

How can I care for my crowns?

It is important to take good care of your crown to extend its lifespan.

  • If your crown or the surrounding teeth are sensitive, be sure to inform your dentist.
  • Daily flossing and the use of interdental brushes can help maintain proper oral hygiene.
  • If you grind your teeth at night, your dentist may recommend a night guard or bite splint to protect the crown and surrounding teeth.
  • Handle temporary crowns with extra care. When using dental floss, try to pull it out from the side of the tooth rather than pulling it upwards, as as this could dislodge the crown.
